Rose Gershwin had a piano to her home for her eldest son, Ira, to learn to play. Instead, George ran to the instrument and began with a rag. No one knows where he learned to play but it was the love of his life. An early girlfriend, Mabel Schirmer, spoke that “George made the piano do things for him. When he sat down at the piano, he not only played what was written—he was improvising all the time. George could make the piano laugh, he could make it sad, he could make it do anything”
